These Baked Red Velvet Donuts are soft, chocolatey, and topped with a luscious cream cheese glaze! Perfect for Valentine’s Day, brunch, or a sweet treat anytime. Made in a heart-shaped donut pan, these festive treats are as beautiful as they are delicious!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Donuts:

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp red food coloring

For the Cream Cheese Glaze:

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk (adjust for consistency)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

For Garnish:

  • Valentine’s Day sprinkles
  • Heart-shaped donut pan (optional but recommended!)

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat and Prep:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Lightly grease the heart-shaped donut pan with non-stick spray or butter.

2️⃣ Mix the Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.

3️⃣ Mix the Wet Ingredients:

  • In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring.

4️⃣ Combine & Fill the Pan:

  • Slowly mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined (don’t overmix!).
  • Spoon or pipe the batter into the heart-shaped donut pan, filling ¾ full.

5️⃣ Bake:

  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Let donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Make the Cream Cheese Glaze:

1️⃣ Beat the softened cream cheese in a bowl until smooth.
2️⃣ Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, mixing until a smooth, pourable glaze forms. (Add more milk if needed.)

Decorate the Donuts:

1️⃣ Dip cooled donuts into the cream cheese glaze, letting excess drip off.
2️⃣ Place on a wire rack and sprinkle immediately with Valentine’s Day sprinkles!

Storage Tips:

  • Fridge: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer: Freeze unglazed donuts for up to 2 months. Thaw and glaze before serving.
